Use of L-carnitine in the feeding of heavy pigs

Use of L-carnitine in the feeding of heavy pigs

Rivista di Suinicoltura 37(7): 97-101

From 40 to 160 kg liveweight 3 groups of 16 Landrace x Large White castrated male and female pigs were given diets based on maize, barley and soyabean meals without or with L-carnitine 25 or 50 mg/kg. Mean daily gain was 620, 628 and 626 g and feed conversion indices 4.0, 3.95 and 3.97 in the 3 groups, respectively. Differences were not significant. Carcass fat tended to be greater and colour lightness of the loin was lower (P<0.01) in pigs given L-carnitine.
