Variation and heritability, correlation, path analysis and genetic divergence studies on assimilate partitioning in leaves, leaf, growth and yield characters of soybean

Field investigations on 41 soybean entries showed significant variation for days to maturity, pods/plant, number of leaves on main stem, dry matter of leaves, per cent contribution of leaf dry matter in yield, total dry matter/plant, leaf area (dm-2)/plant, 100-seed weight, harvest index and yield/plant. Number of leaves on main branches, leaf area/plant, yield/ plant, 100-seed weight, pods/plant, number of leaves/plant and leaf dry matter/plant showed high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV). High heritability accompanied by high GCV was observed for the characters viz., 100-grain weight, total dry matter/plant, yield/plant, dry matter of leaves/ plant and pods/plant indicating less involvement of environment in these traits. Further high genetic advance was noticed for pods/plant and total dry matter/plant along with high GCV values. Further yield/plant showed highly significant and positive correlation with leaves on branches/plant contribution of leaf dry matter in yield, leaf area/plant, harvest index and 100-seed weight, while it was negatively correlated with breadth of central leaflet. Since the characters central leaflet length and breadth leaves on main stem, and branches, branches/plant contribution of leaf dry matter in yield, leaf area and pods/plant showed direct positive effect on grain yield, they should be given more weight-age during making selections for bringing improvement in soybean. Sum of negative indirect contribution via certain characters nullified the positive indirect contribution via other characters. hence they could not establish significant positive correlations with yield due to their mutual elimination of positive and negative indirect effects via other characters. These 41 genotypes were grouped into 12 different clusters. Genetic diversity was independent of geographic region. From the cluster mean values donors for different characters are suggested.
