Nampyeongbyeo is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from a cross between Iri390 and Milyang95 by the rice breeding team of National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station(NHAES), RDA, in 1997. This cultivar has a short grain shape and about 122 days growth duration from transplanting to harvesting under Korean climatic conditions. Nampyeongbyeo has lodging resistance with short-stature, average 80cm tall culm length and high adaptability for double cropping and late cultivation. Milled kernels of Nampyeongbyeo are translucent with non-glutinous endosperm. It has about 18.3% of amylose content and similar palatability of cooked rice compared with Dongjinbyeo. This cultivar shows moderate resistance to leaf blast and resistance to stripe virus. The yield performance of Nampyeongbyeo is about 5.28MT/ha, 5.56MT/ha and 5.63MT/ha in milled rice under ordinary, double cropping and late cultivations, respectively. It shows about 7% and 3% higher yield under double cropping and late cultivation compared with the check variety, Dongjinbyeo. This cultivar is adaptable to double cropping or late cultivation in southern plain area of Korea.
