Accumulation and activation of apoplasmic Fe in wheat and cucumber roots

The accumulation of apoplasmic Fe in the roots of wheat and cucumber was investigated in a pot experiment. In conditions which were deficient in Fe, apoplasmic Fe represented about 53% of the total Fe absorbed by wheat roots but only 4% of that absorbed by cucumber roots.
