Acquired protection and production of immobilization antibody against Cryptocaryon irritans (Ciliophora, Hymenostomatida) in mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus)
Cryptocaryon irritans obtained from a naturally-infected whitespot-tail morwong (Goniistius zonatus) were used to immunize mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus). Immunized (n = 8) and control (n = 7) mummichogs were challenged with theronts of C. irritans. All 7 control fish became infected and the numbers of tomonts recovered from each fish ranged from 19 to 284 (mean 132), whereas only 1 of the immunized fish became infected, from which only one tomont was recovered.
