Age-related progression of ossification of the collateral cartilages of the distal phalanx in the front feet of Finnish horses

Age-related progression of ossification of the collateral cartilages of the distal phalanx in the front feet of Finnish horses

Suomen Elainlaakarilehti 104(7/8): 399-405

Ossification of the collateral cartilages of the front feet was studied by dorsopalmar radiography of 85 Finnish horses; radiographs were taken twice from 66 and 3 times from 19 horses, at intervals of 4 months to 5 years. The progression of ossification is shown in graphs and tables; ossification was more apparent in females, with a particularly rapid increase at 1.5-2.5 years of age, whereas the process was slower in males and continued until 3 years of age.
