Agricultural policies and economic incentives for sustainable land use: a sub-regional model for Costa Rica

Agricultural policies and economic incentives for sustainable land use: a sub-regional model for Costa Rica

Investigacion Agraria, Economia 12(1/2/3): 5-15

An interdisciplinary methodology for land use evaluation is illustrated for Guacimo county in Costa Rica. A linear programming model maximizes aggregated farm income by selecting crops and technologies, subject to resource and sustainability constraints. Sustainability is measured as soil nutrient depletion and biocide use. The effects of policy interventions are analysed as land use scenarios.
