Air pollution impacts on forest trees and biological aspects of the environment optimization in Belarus

Air pollution impacts on forest trees and biological aspects of the environment optimization in Belarus

Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Workshop on science and technology to save and better utilize Central and Eastern Europe' s forests, Saulberg, Lower Bavaria, Germany, July 15-19, 1996: 161-176

The effects of air pollution on forests in Belarus is described. 1 685 000 hectares of forest are polluted with radioactive fallout from Chernobyl. Annual emission of air pollutants constitutes 2.5 million tons and about 30% of the land area is affected. Pinus sylvestris constitutes 57.6% of forests in Belarus and studies of the physiological effects of air pollution on the needles of this species are described.
