Alimentary prophylaxis of puerperal hypocalcemia (and of Downer cow) in the milking cow

, : Alimentary prophylaxis of puerperal hypocalcemia (and of Downer cow) in the milking cow. Atti della Societa Italiana di Buiatria 30: 123-138

A gentle, physiological and targeted method of intervention to prevent puerperal collapse is discussed. The method consists of appropriate management of the herd and of single cows before and after calving. Only a few cows should reach calving with a body condition score above 3.0-3.5. This can be achieved by feeding milking cows with a low-energy diet (not above 0.9 feed units for lactation (UFL)/kg DM). Two months before calving cows should have healthy digestive capabilities.
