A combined provenance/progeny trial of native Pinus sylvestris populations was established on a site in southern Scotland in 1991. Four provenances (Abernethy, Glen Affric, Loch Maree and Rannoch) were chosen to represent the range-wide geographical variation for this species within Scotland. At 3 yr after outplanting (7 yr old) the quantitative traits of spring vegetative bud burst, height and diameter were measured.
