The quantitative and qualitative structure of fungal communities from fine (0.5-1 mm diameter) and thicker (5 mm) roots of 30- and 49-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) were studied, and their antagonistic effects on Heterobasidion annosum and Armillaria ostoyae were evaluated in vitro. Root material was collected from P. sylvestris trees in the Huta Pusta Forest District in western Poland in September 1991. Sixty five fungal species were identified from the root samples.
