The effects of differences in soil water storage and soil nutrients on gas exchange characteristics of shrub species inhabiting arroyo and non-arroyo areas were investigated at the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center, New Mexico. Adult shrubs of Fallugia paradoxa (Apache plume), Chilopsis linearis (desert willow) and Prosopis glandulosa (arroyo mesquite) were used. F. paradoxa and P. glandulosa are semi-riparian shrubs, and C. linearis an obligate riparian shrub.
