Bark and leaf essential oils of cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum Presl) grown in Parana, Brazil

Bark and leaf essential oils of cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum Presl) grown in Parana, Brazil

Ciencia e Tecnologia de Alimentos 17(3): 281-285

Bark and leaves were sampled from 4-year-old C. verum (C. zeylanicum) trees planted in Morretes, Parana, Brazil, fertilized with organic manure (10 kg farmyard manure/tree applied at planting and annually in spring) (treatment M) or fertilized with lime (500 g/planting hole applied at planting and every 2 years) + organic manure (10 kg farmyard manure/tree applied at planting and annually in spring) + NPK (100 g N + 150 g P + 60 g K/tree, applied at planting and annually in spring) (treatment C). On average, the bark contained 0.2% essential oil and the leaves contained 2.0% essential oil. The bark essential oils contained 54.7% (treatment M) and 58.4% (treatment C) cinnamaldehyde. The leaf essential oils contained 94.1% (treatment M) and 95.1% (treatment C) eugenol. No differences were observed in essential oil composition between treatments M and C but comparisons between individual trees in each treatment showed differences between trees.
