Six primer pairs were developed to amplify microsatellite loci. When 20 coastal cutthroat trout from populations from Washington State were analysed using these primers, polymorphisms were detected for 5 of these loci. The mean number of alleles per locus was 9 and the mean heterozygosity was 0.85. Optimum PCR conditions for the use of these primers were determined. The 6 primer sets were tested on 13 additional salmonid species from 4 genera (Oncorhynchus, Salmo, Salvelinus and Thymallus).
