Cold hardiness of diploid and induced tetraploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)

Cold hardiness of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) diploids and derived tetraploids was evaluated by artificial freezing (-6 to -18 degrees C) at 3 stages of development (young seedlings, 2- 3-leaf stage and beginning of tillering) in 1995-96. Cold hardiness increased during development, and at all plant stages, cold hardiness of diploids was higher (-9 to -15 degrees C) than that of derived tetraploids.
