Low temperature treatment of rice seedlings decreased seedling height, dry weight of aboveground parts and root number with a greater effect as treatment became later from the 1- to 3-leaf stage. The effect on seedling height, tillering rate, aboveground dry matter and root number increased with increasing duration of cold treatment up to 72 hours. Soaking seed in 450 ppm urea increased seedling height, dry weight of aboveground parts and culm diameter, but did not affect green leaf number.
