Comparative evaluation of alternative methods for antifungal susceptibility testing of filamentous fungi

Fluconazole and amphotericin B susceptibilities of Mucor spp., Aspergillus flavus, A. niger and A. fumigatus were assessed by macrodilution, microdilution and colorimetric microdilution assays. In the colorimetric assay the results were evaluated by a yellow colored tetrazolium salt, MTT, which is reduced to purple formazan by cellular dehydrogenases. The macrodilution and microdilution assays were performed according to NCCLS studies that were designed to provide standard guidelines.
