Comparative in vitro studies on the sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum to quinine and quinidine

Comparative in vitro studies on the sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum to quinine and quinidine

Mitteilungen der Osterreichischen Gesellschaft fur Tropenmedizin und Parasitologie ( 20): 183-188

The in vitro sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum to quinine and quinidine was investigated at Mae Hong Son, northwestern Thailand, from 1994 to 1996. The assays were based on the WHO Standard Microtest for the assessment of the inhibition of schizont maturation (Mark II). In total, 58 fresh isolates were tested with quinine and quinidine. The EC50 for quinine showed major improvement between 1994 and 1995, considered to be the result of the closure of the border to nearby Myanmar.
