In reviewing what has been achieved and speculating about the future, this chapter sets out to assess the broader significance of important developments in conservation thought and action in the EU and the USA. It begins by setting out the traditional policy stance taken towards resource and nature conservation and its inadequacies in the face of intensification of agricultural production during the post-World War II period.
