Metaphase I (MI) chromosome pairing, numbers of bound chromosome arms and anaphase I (AI) segregation were studied in diploid annual and perennial ryegrass and their hybrid plants (Lolium hybridum). Diploid annual and perennial ryegrass had very regular meiosis with mainly ring bivalents and a high number of bound chromosome arms. Chromosome segregation was also balanced at AI in these species.
