Development and heat resistance of abomasal worm larvae from goats

Faecal samples from 128 goats, containing abomasum worm eggs were incubated to study their hatchability. Haemonchus eggs showed the highest hatchability (100%) followed by Trichostrongylus and Ostertagia eggs. Cooperia eggs had the lowest hatchability (88%). The eclosion was temperature dependent, the higher the temperature, the shorter the eclosion time; 5 to 6 days at 13-16 degrees C and 3 to 4 days at 19-23 degrees C. The heat resistance of the larvae increased as a function of their age.
