The paper reviews the impact of development activities on the traditional transhumant pastoral system in the Central Himalayan Darma and Byans valleys, Dharchula sub-division, Uttar Pradesh, India. Types of roles livestock have traditionally played in the economic survival of pastoralists are discussed. Commercialization and modernization have led to the breakup of the traditional economy with the consequence that the role of animals is decreasing.
