Abstract
Studies were made of the root systems of young Pinus sylvestris planted on the plough slices on drained peatland where the furrows either were or were not part of the drainage network. The vertical and horizontal structure of the root systems is illustrated, and it is concluded that in order to achieve optimum root system development the planting furrows must run into the drainage ditches.
