Three field trials were conducted at Cuddalore (Tamil Nadu), from 1993 to 1996 to find a suitable gap-filling technology in sugarcane ratoon crops. Filling the gaps in the ratoon crop with sprouted sugarcane stubble from the same field (taken from the field border or thickly populated areas) increased cane yield to 112.2 t/ha, compared with 65.5 t in controls.
