Dry matter content and productivity of diploid and tetraploid varieties and populations of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)

In cultivar trials on chernozem soil in 1995-97 at Pleven, Bulgaria with 20 cultivars of L. perenne given 140 kg N/ha and cut at early heading and then every 30 days thereafter during the growing season (4-5 cuts), tetraploid cultivars gave higher yields than diploid cultivars and the most productive cultivars were Merlinda and Meltra which gave 24.4 and 10.0% higher yields than the average value for tetraploids. The best diploid cultivars were Morenne and Weibull. Herbage dry matter content was lowest from the first regrowth and highest from the third regrowth. The highest yielding cultivars did not necessarily have the highest dry matter content so the recommended cultivars were Merlinda and Condesa (tetraploids) and Targovishte, Pamir, Weibull E-36, Morenne and Mondial (diploids).
