Effect of age of seedlings and nitrogen levels on growth and yield of onion (Allium cepa L.)

In field trials in 1989-92 on a sandy loam soil at Bilaspur, India, 5-, 6- and 7-week-old onion (cv. Pusa Red) seedlings were supplied with N at 50, 100 or 150 kg/ha in 1989-90 and 5-, 6- and 7-week-old seedlings were supplied with N at 50, 100, 150 or 200 kg/ha in 1990-91 and 1991-92. The optimum seedling age and N application rate, in terms of leaf length, number of leaves per plant, bolting percentage, bulb weight and bulb yield were 6 weeks old and 150 kg/ha, respectively.
