305 primiparous and 553 multiparous cows from 9 locations were randomly assigned to a block design, based on parity, days in gestation and body weight. The cows were fed diets containing 0, 8, 16 or 24 mg/kg dry matter monensin. Milk production, milk composition, feed intake, body weights and condition scores were determined throughout the study. Milk yield increased by an average of 1 kg/day in the monensin-treated groups relative to controls and increases were significant at 8 and 24 mg/kg.
