Effect of planting date and spacing on oil yield and major yield components of Tagetes minuta

Results on the effect of planting dates and plant spacing in homogeneous population of Tagetes minuta, developed by phenotypic assortative mating, revealed that mid-October planting (D2) and closer spacing (45 cm X 45 cm) (S1) resulted in maximum oil yield, coupled with maximum increase in plant height and/or primary branch number. Agronomic manipulations by growing the crop with the most ideal date of planting (D2) and plant spacing (S1) for the five growth parameters, namely leaf stem ratio, flower leaf ratio, flower stem ratio, per cent flowered plants and herbage yield as well as oil content (%) may not have much bearing upon the oil yield enhancement in T. minuta. However, such manipulations for the rest two growth parameters plant height and primary branch number may merit a practical meaning in view of their observed high associations with oil yield for exhibiting correlated responses to specific dates of planting and plant spacing.
