Effect of pollinating insects on seed yield in seed production of onion (Allium cepa L.)

The effects of 2 pollinating insects, honey bee (Apis mellifera) and fly (Lucilia caesar), placed in a net house during flowering, on seed yield of onions were investigated during 1994-95. Flies were the most frequent pollinators. Rates of seed set were high in 1994: 64.1% seed set for fly-pollinated onions and 62.7% seed set for honey bee-pollinated onions, compared with 60.8% for open field pollination.
