Effect of reducing antinutritional factors in silkworm pupae meal on its feeding value of broilers

Deoiled silkworm pupae meal was examined for the presence of certain antinutritional substances. Phenols were found in high amount (2%) and the stuff was detanned. A feeding trial of seven week duration with broilers was conducted, using the detanned silkworm pupae meal and deoiled silkworm pupae meal separately at 2.5% and 5% levels having fishmeal (10%) as a control. The feed conversion ratio and the weight gain of chicks were better on diet containing detanned silkworm pupae meal than those on deoiled silkworm pupae meal diet and the same was comparable with the fishmeal control, thereby indicating an effective utilisation of silkworm pupae meal proteins after detanning.
