Effects of nitrogen fertilization and watering on grain yield, dry matter accumulation and nitrogen uptake in durum wheat

In a field trial in 1986-89 at Foggia, Italy, durum wheat was not irrigated, or given 350 msuperscript 3 water/ha at wilting point or at 35% of available water, and was given 40, 80, 120, 160 or 200 kg N/ha. In dry years (1986/87 and 1988/89) irrigation and N fertilizer had significant positive effects on grain yield, dry matter accumulation, total plant N content and N uptake, while the effects of treatments were small in the wet year of 1987/88.
