Energy metabolism and nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium balance in suckling yak calves receiving diet consisting of concentrate and straw

Three yak calves weighing 80 kg were suckled and fed diets consisting of straw:concentrate at a ratio of 2:1. Energy metabolism and N, P and Ca balance were determined and growth was monitored throughout the 40-day feeding trial. Yak milk intake was about 1 kg/day at 2 sucklings (08.00 and 16.00 h). Average digestibilities were as follows: DM 68.3%, organic matter 69.9%, energy 74.6%, N 67.3% and P 55.3%. Average daily weight gain was 0.183 kg.
