The effects of shade (0, 25, 50 or 75%) and fertilizer application (75, 100, 125 and 150% of the recommended rate of 75:50:50 kg NPK/ha) on Z. officinale yields and nutrient uptake were assessed in trials at Vellayani in Kerala, India. Nutrient uptake increased as fertilizer rate increased under all shade intensities but the response in terms of rhizome yield per unit increase in fertilizer rate was highest under 25% shade followed by 50, 0 and 75% shade.
