Estimation of genetic and phenotypic parameters of the growth curve in laying hens

Data on the performance from hatching to 72 weeks of age of 656 hens in Brazil (from matings of 92 hens with 23 cocks), adjusted for environmental factors using the von Bertalanffy growth curve model, were analysed. Based on sire + dam estimates, the heritability of asymptotic body weight, maturity index and age at the point of inflection was 0.40, 0.36 and 0.33 respectively.
