Estimation of genetic progress realized by selection on ovulation rate, embryo mortality and litter size in an experimental flock of sheep

Estimation of genetic progress realized by selection on ovulation rate, embryo mortality and litter size in an experimental flock of sheep

Rencontres Recherches Ruminants ( 5): 111-113

Reproductive traits were compared over a 2-year period in (1) a Romanov flock with rams taken from a flock selected for the traits over a 16-year period, mated with unselected females, and (2) a Romanov flock with unselected rams and ewes. The ovulation rates in flocks 1 and 2 were in agreement with predictions of genetic gains from a BLUP animal model used on data from the selection flock from which the flock-1 rams were taken (0.04 ova per year).
