After 12 years without agricultural use and with a scrub vegetation, the soil fertility of a former tropical rain forest site in Sao Paulo was tested by cultivating Zea mays. Three different soil preparations were used: burning, parterring and removal of the stubs (?remaining vegetation). The area was allowed to regenerate for 2 yr, and the composition of the resulting vegetation analysed.
