Genetic resources, intellectual property rights and the rights of indigenous communities

Genetic resources, intellectual property rights and the rights of indigenous communities

Madras Agricultural Journal 83(7): 419-421

This paper explores the problems associated with intellectual property rights, which centre around the fact that bioresources are largely located in developing countries whereas the technology to exploit the resources is often confined to industrialized countries. The requirements of GATT/Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) are described.
