Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-mediated analysis of rDNA from isolates of M. fructicola and M. laxa from cherry orchards in Michigan, USA, revealed interspecies restriction site variation in the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) region and length variation in the small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene. ITS1 sequences from both species were 146 bp long; however, the ITS1 of M. laxa differed at 3 positions from the ITS1 of M. fructicola.
