History of fire in a southern Ohio second-growth mixed-oak forest

General Technical Report North Central Forest Experiment Station, USDA Forest Service ( NC-188): 172-183

History of fire in a southern Ohio second-growth mixed-oak forest

Fire-scar patterns were analysed in 14 oak cross-sections from a mixed oak (Quercus alba, Q. velutina and Q. rubra) stand in Vinton County, SE Ohio, to determine the frequency and seasonality of fire. The stand was even-aged and originated in the mid-1850's, so the fire history is representative of the period after Euro-American settlement. The tree growth rings were cross-dated, calendar year of the fire scars was assigned and season of burning noted.
