Duerr et al. question the statistical analysis used in the article by Mostad et al. (Lancet (1997) 359 922) reporting increased shedding of HIV infected cells by women using depot medroxyprogesterone acetate for birth control. They also ask about the potential inferences of this finding as they may affect birth control recommendations. Mostad et al. reply. Both groups reaffirm the need for the continued use of condoms regardless of other methods of contraception.
