Host defense to Pneumocystis carinii: the missing pieces in the jigsaw

Host defense to Pneumocystis carinii: the missing pieces in the jigsaw

Trends in Microbiology 6(3): 97-98

In response to a previous paper on the immune response to P. carinii [Hanano, R.; Kaufmann, S. H. E. Trends in Microbiology (1998) 6, 71-75] attention is drawn to several important points made in the paper. These include the mechanism of killing the microorganism and alveolar macrophages acting as the first line of defence to P. carinii. An important area of investigation which was not discussed relates to the recognition of P. carinii antigens by B and T cells. It is agreed that the nomenclature used to describe the life-cycle stages of P. carinii should be consistent with the taxonomic classification of the microorganism.
