How the market will treat the 1998 apple crop

Good Fruit Grower 49(10): 38-39
How the market will treat the 1998 apple crop
A brief history of how the crop size for apples in Washington has fluctuated over the 1960-95 period is presented. The price implications of the record crop forecast for 1998 are considered. Use of a statistical model to make projections indicates that a crop with 100 million cartons of fresh apples would cause prices to drop about 16% below 1997 prices. For 110 million cartons the fall would be 28%, whilst 120 million cartons would result in a drop in prices of almost 40%.
