Local adaptation in the insect-transmitted fungal pathogen Microbotryum violaceum on its host plant Silene latifolia was investigated. Host plants and fungal strains from 14 populations were used to compare fungal infection success on sympatric and allopatric hosts in a cross-inoculation experiment. The results show parasites to be locally maladapted both in terms of their performance and their invasibility.
