Management of natural populations and maintenance of genetic diversity of Euterpe edulis, the heart-of-palm tree

Management of natural populations and maintenance of genetic diversity of Euterpe edulis, the heart-of-palm tree

Recent advances in biotechnology for tree conservation and management Proceedings of an IFS Workshop, Florianopolis, Brazil, 15-19 September 1997: 145-156

In tropical forests, sustainable management of natural populations is an attractive strategy because it reconciles conservation with social ends or economic interests. However, sustainability is not simple in tropical forests, especially for timber production. Non-woody species, like the heart-of-palm-tree (palmito, Euterpe edulis) and medicinal and ornamental plants, are the key for combining conservation and production.
