Metastatic melanoma causing spinal cord compression in a horse

A 12-year-old female grey Arabian horse with an acute onset of paralysis was seen in lateral recumbency. Examination revealed numerous black cutaneous nodules around the anus and ventral tail area and paraparesis with paralysis of the pelvic limbs and tail. The animal also showed faecal and urinary incontinence. Two firm masses were detected per rectum on the ventral surface of the lumbar vertebrae.
