Methodological guidance for the appraisal of historic rural buildings in their land context. A case study in western Emilia

Methodological guidance for the appraisal of historic rural buildings in their land context. A case study in western Emilia

Genio Rurale 61(5): 32-43

Built structures in rural areas are influenced, it is argued, by a set of physical-environmental factors (climate, geology, etc.) and a set of socio-cultural factors (infrastructure, ownership, family, tradition). The interaction of these factors gives rise to a range of types which are 'typical' in their contexts. A matrix is proposed which sets a vertical column of features (fenestration, volumes, site, etc.) against the natural and social determinants.
