The development of the composting operation in the city of O'Neill, Nebraska, USA, is described. The composting operation was started in 1988. Following a fire that destroyed the original processing facility, the city joined forces with the private hauler J&J Sanitation, to develop a facility to process and compost 100 tons/day of municipal solid waste. Material is sorted prior to compostable residues being ground and then composted while recyclable material are recovered.
