Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance of eight foliage plant species as affected by photosynthetic photon flux density and temperature

CO2 assimilation rate, intercellular CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate as affected by photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and temperature were determined for eight foliage plants. Chlorophyll contents of most plants tended to increase by the low PPFD (35-100 mumol cntdot m-2 cntdot s-1) and temperature compared to high PPFD (300 mumol cntdot m-2 cntdot s-1) and temperature . Seven foliage plants exhibited increased rate of CO2 assimilation at 25degreeC under 100 to 300 mumol cntdot m-2 cntdot s-1 PPFD, but Diffenbachia had a photosynthetic advantage at level of 35 mumol cntdot m-2 cntdot s-1 PPFD. Intercellular CO2 concentration was increased at 15degreeC under 35 mumol cntdot m-2 cntdot s-1 PPFD, but Ficus benjamina attained high level of CO2 concentration under 300 mumol cntdot m2 cntdot s-1 PPFD. Hedera helix maintained a consistent level of intercellular CO2 without regard to temperature and level of PPFD. Stomatal conductance and transpiration rate in experimented plants except Hedera helix increased at 25degreeC under level of 35 mu mol cntdot m-2 cntdot s-1 PPFD. But Apenlandra, Ficus elastica and F. benjamina showed increased stomatal conductance and transpiration rate under the level of 100 to 300 mumol cntdot m-2 cntdot s-1 PPFD. Experimented foliage plants had no consistent relationship among CO2 assimilation, intercellular CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate.
