The phylogenetics of 47 species of Pinus was studied, based on a 650-bp nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region. The sequence was also examined in Picea and Cathaya. The phylogenetic hypotheses and evolutionary scenarios proposed centre on the gene tree based on this locus, and contrast with previously derived phylogeny of Pinus, especially with regard to the subsect. Contortae. The position of Pinus aristata and P. nelsonii was difficult.
