As part of an international programme of research into biomass alternatives to wood, a breeding programme using M. sacchariflorus, M. purpurascens and M. sinensis, all endemic to east Russia, was started in 1992. The large germplasm collection of the 3 species was used to select high yielding genotypes and those better adapted to unfavourable environmental conditions (drought and salinity).
